Our Tools

For those of you that are new to geocaching, or those of you that would like to know how we go about our geocaching, we thought we would create this page detailing what GPS receivers we use, how we use our Netbook PC for paperless geocaching, and the software that we use to assist us with our geocaching.

This page is very much “UNDER CONSTRUCTION”.

GPS Receivers

We use a Garmin Nuvi 310 in our car which directs us along roads close to the cache location. Before each cache hunt we update the Nuvi with a special GPI file created using a GSAK macro. Details of how you can do the same are on the Advanced Nuvi Macro website.

We also use a Garmin Etrex Legend HCx which we use when we get close to “ground zero”. We alsouse this GPSr to track our geocaching exploits. This GPSr is also loaded up with a geocaching “Points of Interest” GPI file using another GSAK macro.

Netbook PC

We use an Eee PC 900 Netbook PC  in order to go paperless geocaching.

We have loaded GSAK, OziExplorer, Mapsource, NRoute and other software on to it so that we can use the Netbook in the field. We also have wireless broadband so that, if we are in range, we can access the internet.

Software

The most important piece of software we use is GSAK.

There are numerous macros we use with GSAK to assist us plan our geocaching expeditions and to keep us up to date with all the cache details. Another GSAK macro automatically updates our profile on the geocaching web site.

These are what we consider to be the most important GSAK macros when using our Netbook PC “in the field” whilst geocaching.

LiveTrack – Live tracking of centre point every 30 seconds. This is the link to the macro thread on the GSAK forums.

LogTemplate – Log your finds and/or did not finds whilst in the field. This is the link to the macro thread on the GSAK forums.

On returning from our geocaching exploits it is a relatively simple task to then log our results (finds and did not finds) on the geocaching website.

We do this by using another GSAK macro called Upload Field Notes. This is the link to the macro thread on the GSAK forums.

Other software that we use includes Google Earth, OziExplorer and MapSource, all which assist us to plan and map our geocaching exploits.
